 Mutabaruka has established himself as both a literary and musical giant, both in Jamaica and abroad, and is arguably one of Jamaica's most respected wordsmiths, dub poets and broadcasters. The "Barefoot Rasta" poems and music have given voice to a nation and helped forge an entirely new genre of music, dub/rhythm poetry. Revolutionary, fiery, scathing, and stinging, Mutabaruka's words are as potent on paper as on CD, and so the literary community needed to create a new term just for his works – meta-dub. What hasn't Muta done? He has cut singles with the late Dennis Brown and Luciano, hosts a hugely popular longtime Jamaican radio show on the IRIE-FM station, served as host of the hugely popular TV series Simply Muta, and many of Mutabaruka's songs recorded with other artists are brought together on the In Combination album (2006) which features songs with reggae greats such as Freddie McGregor, Cocoa Tea, Sugar Minott, Marcia Griffiths, Tony Rebel and more. Celina Agaton for the Art Gallery of Ontario Canada's National Ballet School and the Manifesto Festival of Community & Culture are partnering up with acclaimed choreographer Lenny Len, of Flavourshop fame for the next instalment of the NBS Flashmob series. Lenny has created an amazing routine for dancers of all ages to participate in. You don't need hip hop experience, you can be 7 or 70 and still join us in the fun. We hope all of you will dance with us, and bring your family, friends, neighbours and co-workers! Everyone is welcome! The performance will take place in downtown Toronto on Sunday, September 25, but we're keeping the location a secret for now. All rehearsals will take place at NBS. Rehearsals will be Tuesday and Friday evenings, from 6:30-8:30, and Saturday mornings, from 10:30-12:00. Rehearsals start on Tuesday, July 12 and continue throughout the summer. Dancers are welcome to attend as many rehearsals as they feel appropriate. On the flip side, you don't need to attend the rehearsals if you don't want...we filmed the choreography so you can study it at home and just show up the day of. The study also clearly illustrates the everyday pathways through which these employment and income insecurity challenges damage health within these groups. “Working Rough, Living Poor” is the result of research conducted in Toronto’s Black Creek community in collaboration with local residents trained to be community-based researchers by Access Alliance. The report’s new insights into the disturbing racialization of precarious employment and poverty in Canadian communities and the far-reaching health impact that these trends have on individuals and families, fills a key gap in data on the experiences of racialized groups in Canada.
